The Vehicle Specialist Fellowship
The organisation has gone from strength to strength. Starting with 52 members at the first meeting at Ludgershall it now has a regular attendance of over 200. We soon established Central Vehicle Depot Ashchurch as our home base but on two memorable occasions has been on the road to Ordnance Depot Antwerp and Ammunition Depot Wulfen where we visited the old site of Vehicle Depot Recklinghausen. Traditions have been established since those early days and a commemorative mug is produced each year to mark the place and date of the reunion; these are now a collectors item. A tie has been designed and items of regalia produced for sale at Reunion Weekends. A museum has been set up and was officially opened in Ashchurch in 1993. Hundreds of items have been donated including medals and a GI uniform given by a visiting American ex-serviceman who was based at Ashchurch during the second world war.
We now have an active database of more than 700 ex-Vehicle Specialists world-wide; this includes a retired Major General, a retired Brigadier and six serving and retired Colonels. The original hardcore members still attend and every year we see new and old members joining the Fellowship. Many are not ex-Vehicle Specialists but have a close association with Vehicle Depots or have been introduced by existing members. Our main aim is to ensure that we keep in touch and help fellow members especially those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. This could be through financial assistance to attend the weekend reunion or through networking for employment. Members travel from as far away as Canada, Hong Kong, Belgium, Germany and Bosnia as well as the far flung outposts of the United Kingdom.
The Reunion normally takes place on the first weekend in November and is open to retired and serving personnel. So, if you would like to join our festivities, or just keep in touch, drop a line with your name and address, including post code, to Chris Keelor. This will ensure that you are included in our annual mail shot and we keep you informed of activities and keep you part of the family.
